In South Africa, Rooibos Tea is about as well known as maple syrup here in Canada! As a South African, you would most often be introduced to this remarkable tea during the very first year of your life, when it would commonly be used as a supplement to breast milk, because of its anti-spasmodic properties. This custom has been passed down from generation to generation through decades and gave origin to the name “Miracle Brew”. Today Rooibos Tea represents 40% of the hot beverage market in South Africa. The tea is popular with young and old because of its wonderful flavour, its health properties and its versatility. Rooibos is unique to South Africa. Ideally it should have been a household product the world over many years ago, were it not for the political situation in South Africa which deterred international trade for many years. It is only since the early 90’s that world markets opened up for South Africa, following the take-over by a new government and the lifting of trade restrictions by importing countries. Since then Rooibos has successfully penetrated the European market and is currently also being served on several major airlines. In Canada Rooibos is unfortunately largely seen as a specialty tea and its availability is limited. This situation MUST change - Every Canadian should experience Rooibos too - for sheer enjoyment of the pure and natural sweet flavour, but most importantly, for its remarkable benefits in terms of our health, as compared to regular teas.
